ALEXANDRIA, La. -- The University of the Southwest men's soccer team put up a valiant effort on the road Thursday afternoon, but ultimately came up short in a 3-2 loss to LSU Alexandria at Generals Soccer Field.
The Mustangs struck first in the 30th minute when junior forward
Yahir Chacon found the back of the net off a perfectly placed long ball from
Juan Perez, giving Southwest an early 1-0 lead. Chacon's goal marked his first of the season.
LSU Alexandria responded just before halftime, leveling the score at 1-1 heading into the break.
Southwest regained the lead in the 53rd minute thanks to a solo effort from
Nicolas Amparan, who took advantage of a misplayed ball at midfield and finished low past the keeper to make it 2-1. Amparan's goal was his first of the season.
Despite the momentum, LSU Alexandria surged back with two goals to gain the lead and ultimately secure the win.

Stephen Chairez was a standout for Southwest, recording seven saves on the day, including several crucial stops to keep the Mustangs within striking distance. Southwest finished with 10 shots, four on goal, and earned three corner kicks.
The Mustangs (1-3-1, 0-1-0 RRAC) will look to bounce back with in their next conference matchup at Xavier on September 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (CT).
