HOBBS, NM —  The University of the Southwest men's basketball team went toe‑to‑toe with Texas A&M–San Antonio in a tightly contested matchup Thursday afternoon, but ultimately came up short in an 81–73 decision at home. The game featured six ties and seven lead changes, underscoring its competitiveness from start to finish.

The Mustangs held a 38–36 halftime advantage, fueled by strong perimeter shooting and defensive energy. Southwest shot 40 percent from the field and 40 percent from three‑point range in the opening half, controlling the pace and limiting easy opportunities for the Jaguars.

EJay Scroggins led all Southwest scorers with 24 points, adding 12 rebounds, four steals, and a block while logging 36 minutes. Scroggins was aggressive, attacking the rim and active on the glass, recording his fourth double‑double of the season.

Jayvian Lawson followed with 14 points, knocking down three three‑pointers and dishing out six assists, while Jalen Williams contributed 12 points, four assists, and two steals for the Mustangs. Isaac Warhurst provided a spark off the bench with 12 points, including two first‑half triples that helped Southwest build early momentum.

Texas A&M–San Antonio caught fire from deep in the second half, shooting 62.5 percent from three after the break, allowing the Jaguars to erase the deficit and regain the lead midway through the period. Despite the surge, Southwest remained within striking distance late, trimming the margin to two possessions with under four minutes remaining.

Southwest finished the game with nine three‑pointers, matched the Jaguars on the boards with 41 rebounds, and forced 13 turnovers, but the difference came at the free‑throw line, where TAMUSA attempted 37 shots compared to Southwest's 26.

The Mustangs will look to build on the strong opening half and individual performances as they continue conference play.
