HOBBS, NM -- The University of the Southwest men's basketball team put together a strong first half but could not hold off a second-half surge by Jarvis Christian, falling 82-72 Thursday night at Jack & Mabel Maddox Student Life Center. The Mustangs move to 5-11 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

Southwest came out firing, shooting nearly 49 percent in the first half and building a 45-40 lead at the break. The Mustangs dominated the paint early, scoring 28 points inside and forcing Jarvis into turnovers that led to transition opportunities. EJay Scroggins and Jayvian Lawson sparked the offense with aggressive drives and timely finishes, while Kevin Boone controlled the glass.

Jarvis Christian responded after halftime, outscoring the Mustangs 42-27 in the second half behind hot shooting and a balanced attack. Despite the Mustangs' efforts, Jarvis capitalized on key possessions late to pull away.

EJay Scroggins paced Southwest with 18 points and seven assists, while Jayvian Lawson added 19 points and five assists. Kevin Boone contributed 13 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, and Jalen Williams chipped in 12 points with five assists. The Mustangs finished shooting 41.7 percent from the field but struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 16.7 percent of their three-point attempts.

Southwest will look to bounce back on Saturday, January 10, when they host Texas College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
