Lady Mustangs Secure 64-59 Victory Over Jarvis Christian at Home

HOBBS, NM -- The University of the Southwest women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 64-59 win over Jarvis Christian on Thursday evening inside the Jack & Mabel Maddox Student Life Center. With the victory, the Mustangs improve to 5-10 overall and 1-8 in conference play, while Jarvis Christian falls to 3-12 (2-7).

Southwest jumped out to an early lead, holding a 15-12 advantage after the first quarter and extending it to 29-21 at halftime. The Mustangs shot 42.9 percent in the opening frame, setting the tone with strong ball movement and defensive intensity. Jarvis Christian mounted a comeback in the third quarter, outscoring USW 26-21 to close the gap to two points heading into the final period. The Mustangs responded with clutch free throws and key defensive stops down the stretch to secure the win.

Karinna Ortiz led all scorers with 26 points, including eight-of-nine from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Seniya Wilson added 22 points and six assists, providing leadership on both ends of the floor, while Alliah Scallion contributed six points and four steals to spark the defense. Southwest finished the game shooting 37.5 percent from the field and 68 percent from the free-throw line, while forcing 23 Jarvis turnovers. Despite being out-rebounded 56-29, the Mustangs capitalized on mistakes, scoring 14 points off turnovers.

The Mustangs will return to action on Saturday, January 10, when they host Texas College. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
