HOBBS, N.M. — In the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, The University of the Southwest baseball team could not replicate the extra‑innings magic of Game One, falling 6–4 to Oklahoma Panhandle State despite an early lead and a strong offensive start. Southwest finishes the day with a split, moving to 1–1 on the season.
Oklahoma Panhandle State opened the scoring in the first on a fielder's‑choice RBI, but Southwest answered immediately. After Santiago Garcia reached and moved into scoring position, Alesandro Morrison delivered an RBI single to tie the game 1–1.
Southwest briefly took control in the third inning, when Dong Joon Shin launched a two‑run home run to left field, scoring Alejandro Montiel and giving Southwest a 3–2 advantage. Shin finished the game with two hits and two RBI, continuing his standout performance from Game One.
The teams traded runs again in the fourth. After OPSU tied the game 3–3, Southwest responded once more as JJ Rosales singled to right‑center to score Carlos Jaquez, pushing Southwest ahead 4–3.
However, the turning point came in the sixth inning. OPSU strung together a pair of walks and a two‑RBI triple, reclaiming the lead at 5–4 before adding an unearned run on a fielding error to extend the margin to 6–4. Southwest was held scoreless over the final three innings.
Southwest starting pitcher Zane Rush allowed just two hits through five innings, striking out one. Reliever Syler Pillsbury absorbed the loss after OPSU scored three times in the sixth, including the go‑ahead triple. Kope Carpio stabilized the game with 1.1 scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
Offensively, Southwest finished with seven hits, including multi‑hit games from Shin, Morrison, and Rosales. Despite placing the tying run at the plate in the seventh, Southwest couldn't break through late.
Southwest returns to action Monday for another doubleheader against OPSU. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
