HOBBS, N.M. -- The University of the Southwest Mustangs fought through a competitive doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Baker Field but came up short in both contests against Wayland Baptist, falling 4–1 in the opener and 4–2 in the late game.
In game one, pitcher Alexis Belen delivered a complete-game effort, allowing six hits and four runs, three earned, while striking out two across 7.0 innings. Southwest's defense was steady, and the Mustangs stayed within reach throughout the afternoon. The game remained scoreless through three innings before Wayland broke the deadlock in the fourth with a sacrifice pop‑up that brought home the first run. The Pioneers added single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to gradually extend their lead.
Southwest's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth when Kamryn Cantu singled, advanced to third, and scored on an RBI groundout by Layla Stouder. Cantu and Elexes Martinez recorded the Mustangs' two hits in the opener, while Wayland's defense kept the Southwest offense quiet with a complete-game outing, allowing just two hits and striking out four.
The Mustangs showed resilience in game two, staging a late rally in the seventh inning behind a powerful swing from Chloe Corral. Southwest trailed 4–0 entering the final frame before a leadoff walk and pinch‑runner Maddison Newton set the stage. Corral then delivered a two‑run home run to left center, bringing the Mustangs within striking distance before the Pioneers closed out the win.
Pitcher Cali Saldana turned in a strong performance in the circle, throwing all 7.0 innings while striking out 13 batters and allowing eight hits and four earned runs. Southwest collected four hits in the game, including singles from Holguin, Campos, Jiminez, and Corral.
With the pair of defeats, Southwest moves to 2–2 on the season. The Mustangs continue to show promise in the circle and fight at the plate, and they will look to build on the late‑game momentum from the nightcap as they turn their attention to the next matchup on Friday.
Head Coach Chris Petroski
"Today, we had no offense or timely hitting. When our pitching staff and defense hold a team to four runs, we must have offensive productivity. Conference opener is this weekend vs. LSUA, our bats need to come together."
