HOBBS, N.M. — The University of the Southwest women's basketball team mounted an impressive second‑half surge, but ultimately fell 70–58 to Louisiana Christian on Thursday evening inside the Maddox Student Life Center. The Lady Mustangs struggled to find an early rhythm, scoring just seven points in the opening quarter while the Wildcats controlled the interior and the glass throughout the night, finishing with a 48–26 rebounding advantage.
Southwest steadily chipped away at the deficit, using a strong third quarter powered by hot perimeter shooting to climb back into the game. The Mustangs hit seven three‑pointers in the period and cut the Louisiana Christian lead to 50–43 heading into the fourth. Saleen Longoria knocked down multiple threes during the run, while Seniya Wilson kept the offense steady with efficient scoring and facilitation.
Wilson led the Mustangs with 19 points, adding five rebounds and five assists in a complete performance, while Karinna Ortiz followed with 16 points, including four made three‑pointers. Longoria contributed eight points and two steals, and Macie Werdel added eight points and five rebounds. Despite the offensive effort, Louisiana Christian responded to Southwest's push with a dominant fourth quarter by Kylei Leblanc, who posted a game‑high 26 points on 10‑of‑17 shooting, including 13 points in the final frame.
Although the Mustangs won the turnover battle 14–11 and outscored the Wildcats in points off turnovers, Louisiana Christian's advantage in the paint and second‑chance scoring proved too much to overcome. Southwest continued to battle until the final minutes, but the Wildcats converted timely baskets down the stretch to secure the road victory.
The Mustangs return to action this Saturday for their final game of the season against LSU Alexandria.
