HOBBS, N.M. — The University of the Southwest baseball team powered its way to a conference series victory this weekend at The Jake, taking two out of three games from Texas College in a high‑scoring set that featured a Friday doubleheader and a Saturday finale.
Southwest opened the series with back‑to‑back wins on Friday, using explosive early innings and consistent production throughout the lineup to secure an 11–2 victory in game one and a 10–8 win in game two. The Mustangs closed the weekend with a offensive showdown in Saturday's finale, ultimately falling 32–26 despite one of the strongest single‑game offensive outputs in program history.

Southwest added runs in each of the next two innings, including a two‑run triple from Garcia and an RBI single from Montiel. Shin and Rosales each tallied multi‑hit, multi‑RBI performances, while reliever Ryland Pittman closed out the final inning to secure the 10–8 win.
Game Three: Texas College 32, Southwest 26
Saturday's series finale became an offensive spectacle, with both teams combining for 58 runs and 50 hits in a game that remained competitive into the late innings. After Texas College opened with an 11‑run first inning, the Mustangs responded with eight runs over the first two frames, highlighted by a solo home run from Jackson Anderson and a bases‑clearing triple from Vyncent Chavez. Southwest continued to battle back, receiving home runs from Shin and Mark Gonzales in the third, as well as RBI triples from Jose Rosales in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Shin delivered a historic performance, finishing 5‑for‑7 with two home runs, seven RBI, and five runs scored, while Chavez added five hits and six RBI. Morrison and Montiel combined for seven runs scored and five RBI. Although Texas College created separation with a seven‑run ninth inning, Southwest continued to fight, adding two runs in the bottom half, including a home run by Izeyah Manzanera, before ultimately falling 32–26.
Series Summary
The Mustangs secured the conference series victory two games to one, producing 47 total runs across three contests and showcasing one of their strongest offensive weekends of the season. Standout performances from Shin, Montiel, Morrison, Chavez, and Rosales fueled the team's momentum throughout the series.
Southwest now looks ahead to a non-conference matchup against New Mexico State on Tuesday.
Head Baseball Coach Steve Appel
"To be honest, it was a terrible weekend to play baseball as the conditions just weren't favorable to anyone. During these days, anything can happen. On the first day, I thought we just battled a little more overall, but on the second day, our hitters were the only players that showed up to play. We have to be better overall on the mound and to be honest it is all mental right now. I am proud of how our positional guys responded in game three, but we just couldn't find a way to be better on the mound. If we can somehow tie in the pitching aspect, we might still have a chance of a good year. I'm somehow still confident that we will put it all together and play our type of baseball. We will get ready for a fun division one matchup Tuesday and then we will get ready for an always fun battle on the road at OLLU."
