ALEXANDRIA, La. -- The University of the Southwest softball team closed out its opening four‑game RRAC series Saturday in Alexandria, falling in both games of the doubleheader to LSU Alexandria.
In game three of the series, Southwest dropped a 13–0 decision in five innings. LSUA struck for five runs in the opening frame and added eight more over the next two innings. The Lady Mustangs generated early pressure when Kilee Raulston reached on a leadoff walk and Kamryn Cantu followed with a bunt single, but Southwest was unable to capitalize after leaving the bases loaded in the first. Lexie Martinez led the offense with two hits, while reliever Sophia Jimenez worked a scoreless final inning in the circle.
Southwest returned to the field for game four, again battling throughout but falling 8–0 in the series finale. The Lady Mustangs produced three hits, coming from Saydi Mendez, Layla Stouder, and Hannah Campos, while also putting multiple runners on base in the third and fourth innings. Starting pitcher Cali Saldana worked the first three frames before Jimenez closed the game in relief. LSUA's steady production across the first four innings proved the difference as the Generals secured the win.
The doubleheader marked games three and four of the series, completing Southwest's weekend road slate. The Lady Mustangs now look ahead to their next road conference matchup against Our Lady of the Lake as they continue to build on their offensive opportunities and gain momentum.
Head Coach Chris Petroski
"LSUA came out of the gate quickly on us and caught us off guard. We had our only opportunity in Game 1 with runners in scoring position, but couldn't execute. We had better at-bats today. It was a huge learning weekend for everyone and we'll be back to the grind next week."
