SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The University of the Southwest took the field for a Friday doubleheader at Our Lady of the Lake, dropping both contests but showing competitive offensive stretches and several key individual performances. The Mustangs will return to action tomorrow for the final game of the three‑game series.
In the opener, Southwest collected seven hits but was unable to push a run across, falling 16–0. The Mustangs put multiple runners on in the fourth inning when Mark Gonzales, Vyncent Chavez, and Jose Rosales delivered three straight hits, but a baserunning out ended the threat. Southwest added two more hits in the fifth and sixth, including a double from Alesandro Morrison, while Tim Sedillo, Santiago Garcia, and Jackson Anderson each contributed base knocks throughout the outing. Starter Kobe Carpio worked 5.0 innings before Andres Franco closed the final frame.
The Mustangs responded with a strong start in game two, jumping out to a 4–0 lead in the third inning. Rosales reached on an error to spark the rally, followed by a double from Anderson that set up a productive sequence. Garcia brought home the game's first run with an RBI groundout, and Alex Montiel added an RBI single moments later. Southwest then delivered its biggest swing of the day as Morrison singled to center to drive in two more runs, rounding out the four‑run frame.
Our Lady of the Lake tied the game with a four‑run fifth before edging ahead with a walk‑off single in the bottom of the ninth. Southwest pitchers Miguel Olivas and Keigo Wajima combined to hold the Saints to eight hits across 8.2 innings, striking out eight and navigating multiple high‑pressure innings with poise. Offensively, Dong Joon Shin posted a multi‑hit performance, including a triple in the fifth, and Montiel recorded two hits with an RBI. Anderson reached three times, including a double and a late walk that kept Southwest's hopes alive in the ninth.
Southwest now turns its attention to Saturday's series finale, looking to carry the energy and execution from its early-game two surge forward. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. (MST) in San Antonio.
