HOBBS, N.M. — The University of the Southwest men's basketball team started Tuesday afternoon's matchup with impressive energy and precision, but a powerful offensive surge from LSU Shreveport swung momentum away from the Mustangs in a 101–75 loss at the Jack & Mabel Maddox Student Life Center.
Southwest (5–18, 2–15 RRAC) delivered one of its sharpest opening stretches of the season, jumping out to a 12–2 advantage behind early baskets from Grant Hickey and EJay Scroggins, along with a three‑pointer from Kevin Boone. The Mustangs controlled the pace through the first five minutes and held their largest lead in the first half. However, LSU Shreveport quickly responded with a decisive run, shooting 54.5 percent in the opening period and turning a double‑digit deficit into a halftime lead.
Despite the shifting momentum, the Mustangs produced a balanced offensive performance, placing five players in double figures. Isaac Warhurst led the scoring effort with 12 points, fueled by four made three‑pointers. Kevin Boone added 11 points while securing 10 rebounds to record a double‑double, and EJay Scroggins matched that scoring mark with 11 points and three steals. Jalen Williams provided an important playmaking presence with nine points and a team‑high five assists. Off the bench, Jayvian Lawson delivered one of his most impactful performances of the season, finishing with nine points and eight assists as he helped stabilize the offense during multiple stretches.
Southwest received another lift from Steven Masini, whose 10 points on 5-of‑9 shooting contributed to the team's 25 bench points. The Mustangs shot 43.3 percent from the field and matched the Pilots with eight turnovers, but LSU Shreveport's size and rebounding proved pivotal. The Pilots held a 44–32 advantage on the glass and turned 13 offensive rebounds into 18 second‑chance points. LSU Shreveport was led by Khi Wallace with 24 points and 14 rebounds, Thaddeus Johnson with 27 points, and Alexzaye Johnson with 20 points and eight assists.
The Mustangs continued to fight throughout the second half, finding rhythm in transition and generating multiple strong scoring runs, but the Pilots answered each push to maintain their lead late.
Southwest heads into another conference matchup on Thursday against Texas A&M Texarkana.
