LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The University of the Southwest dropped its midweek road matchup on Tuesday, falling 39–4 to New Mexico State at Johnson Stadium. The Mustangs produced nine hits on the afternoon and showed an offensive push in the second and eighth innings, but were unable to keep pace with an Aggie lineup that generated scoring in every frame.
Southwest struck early in the second when Santiago Garcia singled and later scored on an RBI hit from Carlos Jaquez, cutting into NMSU's early advantage. The Mustangs recorded three hits in the inning, including singles from Garcia, Vyncent Chavez, and Jaquez, marking their strongest stretch of early offense.
The Mustangs added three more runs in the eighth behind a late-inning surge. Tim Sedillo opened the frame with a double, and Jackson Anderson reached on a walk to set the table. After a defensive miscue allowed Sedillo to come home, Elijah Arenibas entered off the bench and delivered a two‑RBI single to left, driving in Anderson and Dong Joon Shin.
Garcia led the Mustangs with a two‑hit day (2-for-3), while Chavez also finished with a pair of hits. Arenibas's two RBIs paced Southwest's production, and five different Mustangs recorded at least one hit.
Southwest utilized seven pitchers throughout the contest. Miguel Olivas made the start, followed by appearances from Keigo Wajima, Major Byrd, Ryland Pittman, Alesandro Morrison, Santiago Guerrero, and Syler Pillsbury.
With the loss, Southwest moves to 7–18 on the season. The Mustangs return to action later this week, facing LSU-Alexandria on Friday and Saturday.
