Southwest Dominates at Plate in Series Win Over Texas College

CHANDLER, Texas — The University of the Southwest softball team secured a series victory over Texas College this weekend, winning two of three games and closing the set with a 12–5 win on Saturday afternoon at Winchester Park.

The series opened Friday with a doubleheader that saw Southwest earn a dominant win in the opener before dropping a tightly contested nightcap. The Mustangs responded in Saturday's finale with a strong all-around performance to clinch the series.

Game 1: Southwest 16, Texas College 7

Southwest set the tone early in the series opener, erupting for eight runs in the second inning and never relinquishing control. The Mustangs totaled 20 hits in the game, with multiple players recording multi-hit performances.

Kamryn Cantu and Yesenia Rodriguez led the offensive surge, while Elexes Martinez finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Southwest capitalized on Texas College errors and consistently applied pressure on the base paths, building a commanding lead by the middle innings.

In the circle, Southwest used a pair of pitchers to limit Texas College's offense down the stretch and close out the victory.

Game 2: Texas College 13, Southwest 12

The second game of Friday's doubleheader featured dramatic momentum swings. Southwest jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs over the first two innings, but Texas College answered with a seven-run fourth inning to swing the game.

Despite the setback, Southwest continued to battle offensively, finishing with 22 hits and tying the game late. However, Texas College pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to take the nightcap.

Game 3: Southwest 12, Texas College 5

Southwest bounced back on Saturday with a complete performance in the series finale. After building an early advantage, the Mustangs broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Danali Garces.

Yesenia Rodriguez and Haylee Hernandez delivered key hits in the middle of the lineup, while Southwest's pitching staff limited Texas College to five runs and shut the door late.

The win secured Southwest's second victory of the series and capped a weekend in which the Mustangs scored 40 runs across three games.

Head Coach Chris Petroski
"This was a huge conference weekend for us. We knew going into this series that we had to hit and score runs. That is exactly what we did. Making adjustments at the plate and having an approach made a difference in the offense. We need to continue to stay disciplined at the plate and get on base. Very proud of the team this weekend."

Southwest will return to conference play Friday as the Mustangs continue their spring schedule.
