Lady Mustangs Drop Doubleheader at Wayland Baptist

PLAINVIEW, Texas —  The University of the Southwest softball team showed strong early offense in both games of Tuesday's doubleheader at Wayland Baptist, but the Lady Mustangs were unable to hold off the Pioneers' late-inning surges, dropping both contests on the road.

Game 1 - Wayland Baptist 9, Southwest 1 (5 Innings)
Southwest opened the day with momentum, striking first in the top of the first inning. Kamryn Cantu led off with a single before Layla Stouder delivered an RBI base hit to center to give the Mustangs a 1–0 advantage.

Wayland Baptist answered in the bottom half and later swung the game with a decisive seven-run fourth inning. Despite five hits from the Southwest lineup, including contributions from Cantu, Stouder, Dalaney Utajara, Andrea Contreras, and Haylee Hernandez, the Mustangs could not overcome the offensive burst.

Alexis Belen worked 3.2 innings in the circle with Jazmynn Hernandez finishing the final frame.

Game 2 - Wayland Baptist 14, Southwest 7
Southwest again started strong, putting up three runs in the opening inning. Cantu reached to start the frame, and after a walk to Yesenia Rodriguez and a free pass to Hannah Campos, Haylee Hernandez lined an RBI single to right to score the game's first run. Moments later, Jocelynn Holguin blasted a two‑run double to left, giving Southwest an early 3–0 lead.

The Mustangs reclaimed momentum in the third, pushing the lead to 6–2 behind a two‑run double from Hernandez and an additional run manufactured on a defensive miscue.

Wayland Baptist responded with a five‑run third inning and continued to surge offensively throughout the middle frames. Southwest added another run in the sixth when Kamryn Cantu came home on an error. Hernandez finished with three RBI, while Holguin recorded two RBI on her first‑inning double. Southwest tallied seven hits in the second matchup.

Head Coach Chris Petroski
"Hit better in the second game. It felt good to finally score some runs. We have to keep up with getting on base and not leaving runners in scoring position. Once we pull it all together, we can compete with anyone."

Southwest returns home this weekend for a scrimmage on Friday and Saturday against El Paso Community College.
