HOBBS, N.M. – The University of the Southwest men's soccer team turned in a strong week at Bob Moran Field, earning a pair of draws against Wayland Baptist (TX) and Randall. The Mustangs opened the week with a 1-1 result against the Pioneers on Wednesday before battling back twice for a 2-2 draw against Randall on Friday.
Southwest 1, Wayland Baptist 1
The Mustangs controlled the tempo for much of Wednesday's matchup, outshooting Wayland Baptist (TX) 12-8 and holding a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Jose Attong put Southwest on the board in the 21st minute, finishing a setup from Stefano Carvajal to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
The advantage was short-lived, however, as Lorian Aerts responded just 84 seconds later with the equalizer for the Pioneers.
Southwest continued to generate opportunities throughout the contest. Yahir Chacon, Jose Cobaleda, David Cadena and Dominic Rueda all recorded shots on goal, while goalkeeper Jeremy Rueda made four saves to help preserve the draw.
Southwest 2, Randall 2
Friday's contest saw the Mustangs rally twice to secure another result in front of their home crowd.
After Randall grabbed an early lead in the sixth minute, Southwest answered when Stefano Carvajal calmly converted a penalty kick in the 15th minute to level the match at 1-1.
The visitors regained the lead shortly after halftime on a goal from Erick Rozo, but the Mustangs once again found a response. Following sustained pressure in the attacking third, Carvajal buried his second penalty kick of the match in the 75th minute to even the score at 2-2.
Southwest dominated statistically, finishing with a 14-3 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Carvajal led the attack with two goals on five shots on target and nearly completed a hat trick after striking both the post and crossbar during the match.
Week Notes
The Mustangs finished the week unbeaten, creating 26 total shots across the two matches while limiting their opponents to just 11 combined attempts. Stefano Carvajal paced the offense with three goals and one assist during the week, while Jeremy Rueda recorded four saves against Wayland Baptist (TX) and helped hold Randall to only three total shots.
Southwest will look to carry that momentum forward into Monday.
