University of the Southwest is proud to announce Timothy Dixon as the new Mustang Men's Basketball head coach. Coach Dixon joins USW after a 4-year stint as the head WBB coach at Missouri Valley College where he grew the Viking team to a 56-61 record and produced 3 NAIA Athletic All-American’s, 15 Heart of America All-Conference players, 15 NAIA Daktronics Academic All Americans, and 3 NAIA Daktronics Academic All-America teams, which included beating a NCAA DII team (Maryville University) on the road for the programs 1st ever win over a NCAA opponent. Going into his 6th season as a collegiate head coach, Dixon has a career winning percentage of .503
Prior to Missouri Valley College, Coach Dixon was an assistant coach on the NCAA Division I Idaho State University women’s basketball staff from 2013-2014 where he served as the recruiting coordinator and guard position coach, helping two players earn Big Sky Conference awards. The year before that Coach Dixon took over the head coaching position at Lamar Community College in Colorado on very short notice with no players returning on the roster or any new signees. That season he led that team to a school season high number of wins. Lamar’s amazing turnaround (18 wins against 12 losses) earned Dixon acknowledgment as the NJCAA Region IX Coach of the Year runner-up.
Dixon has coached at the college level since 2000. He has served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I schools Arizona State University, Grand Canyon University, Idaho State and NJCAA schools Pima Community College, Glendale (Ariz.) Community College, and South Mountain Community College.
Off the court, Coach Dixon emphasizes academic success and community service. At MVC the average GPA improved from 2.08 the year before Dixon arrived to 3.486 after his arrival. Coach Dixon also is an active global recruiter and has received commitments from players all over the world. His extensive network has allowed him to recruit talented athletes from Russia, Latvia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Australia, Bosnia, New Zealand, Brazil, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Spain, as well as the U.S.
Dixon has a Masters degree in Special Education from Grand Canyon University. He and his wife Traci have three sons, Jake, Tanner and Trevor and all are looking forward to joining the Mustang family and making a new home in Hobbs.
