Jim Coleman scored a team-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and NCAA Division II Western New Mexico edged University of the Southwest 89-84 Friday evening at the Maddox Student Life Center.
A Coleman layup with 2:37 remaining in the second half put the Mustangs up 80-75. WNM countered with a two-minute 8-0 run and led 83-80 with 33 seconds remaining in regulation.
Coleman converted a pair of free throws that brought the Mustangs to within one with 10 seconds remaining, but WNM hit its free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
Senior
David Blaylock had an effective outing and scored 19 points and went 6-for-8 at the charity stripe. Blaylock, along with senior
Marcelious Green, handed out a game-high six assists. Green also added 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor.
USW (1-5) returns to the hardwood Tuesday and play host to NCAA Division II New Mexico Highlands.
