HOBBS, N.M. – University of the Southwest volleyball team put on quite a block party Saturday afternoon at the Maddox Student Life Center.
The Lady Mustangs rolled past Wiley 25-22, 25-3, 25-21 and clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's RRAC tournament. USW dominated in front of the net and recorded nine team blocks, while the Wildcats didn't muster a single block.
"Today, everyone left everything on the court," USW head coach
Angela Franke said. "We knew how important this game was and the team came in and wouldn't accept anything but the best from one other as well as from themselves. We stayed disciplined , kept out nerves and executed our game plan that we worked on this week. I couldn't ask for a better group of girls and I am so excited for the tournament next week."
Senior
Shelby Bartley, playing her final home game as a Mustang, tallied a game-high 12 kills and finished with a staggering .417 hitting percentage. The Canyon, Texas native also finished with two solo blocks and three assisted blocks.
Junior
Hannah Massey arguably played her best match of the season. The Las Cruces, New Mexico product recorded 10 kills and hit .350.
Sophomore
Brenda Pargas added 13 assists and in the middle of the second set rolled off four service aces. Junior
Miranda Tapia added 12 assists and three digs.
Senior
Karina Grajeda added 12 digs and a pair of assists.
USW opens the conference tournament Friday, November 10 at 2:30 p.m. versus Langston. The winner of that match moves on to battle No. 2 seed Huston-Tillotson at 7 p.m.
The tournament host is University of Saint Thomas in Houston.
