WINFIELD, Kan. – The University of the Southwest men's and women's outdoor track & field teams opened their 2017 season at the Southwestern Invitational.
USW enjoyed success on the women's side with a pair of top 5 individual finishes.
Selena Ornelas won the javelin throw with a toss of 37.88 meters.
Katrina Weir, competing in her first race since the NAIA indoor championships, placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.39.
Furthermore, the Mustangs enjoyed success throughout the invite.
Shelby Bartley finished in the top 10 in a pair of throwing events. She placed eighth in the discus with a toss of 38.22 meters and ninth in the shot put with a heave of 10.17 meters.
Jamiah Evans earned three top 15 finishes. She placed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 11.02 meters, 11
th in the hammer throw with a heave of 36.43 meters and 13
th in the discus with a toss of 36.68 meters.
Chenoah Belen placed 11
th in the shot put with a throw of 9.72 meters.
Alexas Aleman fiished sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:55.37. Aleman also finished 13
th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:14.85.
On the men's side,
Charlie Quintero finished 8
th in the 1500-meter run with a time of 6:42.28, while
Jacob Silva (26
th) crossed the finish line in 4:47.04 and
Jonathan Moran (29
th) finished with a time of 6:08.11.
The Mustangs return to action March 25 at the UTEP Springtime Invite.
