HOBBS, N.M. – University of the Southwest went toe-to-toe with regional rival Wayland Baptist, but the Pioneers scored a goal at the 60-minute mark in the second half and escaped with a 1-0 win over the Mustangs.
"I'm really proud of our effort today," USW head men's soccer coach
Robert Ssejjemba said following the match. "We battled against a really good team and we played well overall. We started strong and the possession was great in the first half. It was just a moment that we lost concertation and in this game that's a deciding factor. We just couldn't seal the ball and they scored."
Reigning Red River Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week,
Dominic Kutzke, continued his strong play and made a game-high seven saves. The Beaver Dam, Wisconsin native also made several saves late in the second half to keep the Mustangs within striking distance.
Ioan Muresan and
Aram Sanchez each tallied two shots for the Mustangs.
USW (1-3) turns to conference play Saturday at Paul Quinn.
