HOBBS, N.M. – NCAA Division II foe University of Texas of the Permian Basin topped University of the Southwest softball 3-1 and 6-4 Tuesday evening in non-conference action at Baker Field.
In the series opener USW (3-3) scored its only run in the bottom of the first inning and kept the Falcons (3-4) off the scoreboard until the top of the fifth inning. UTPB added three runs in the inning and held off the Mustangs the remainder of the game.
Brianna Gonzalez and Alexis Silva each collected a hit for the Mustangs.
Madison Garcia was tagged with the loss. The senior tossed five innings and scattered seven hits and allowed three runs and struck out one batter and didn't allow a walk.
In the night cap the Mustangs were unable to overcome four errors.
Madison Rosenthal batted 1-for-2 with a pair of runs batted in, while Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with an RBI single.
Gabrielle Heckmann started in the circle and earned the no decision. She tossed four and two-third innings and scattered four hits and allowed three runs.
MyKaya Olivas entered in relief and absorbed the loss. She threw two and one-third innings and scattered two hits and allowed three runs, one of which was earned, and struck out one.
USW returns to action Tuesday, February 13 at NCAA Division III Sul Ross State.
