HOBBS, N.M. – University of the Southwest baseball hosts LSU – Alexandria this weekend for a three-game series at Jake Williams Field. The two teams meet Friday for a noon doubleheader and follow that with a single-nine inning tilt Saturday, also at noon.
 
The two programs played a three-game series in 2017 at LSUA, with the Generals winning the series two games to one. LSUA won game one 5-0 with USW taking game two 4-0. LSUA won game three 2-1 to take the series.
 
The Mustangs will rely on its deep pitching corps to navigate a tough LSUA lineup.
 
Senior Axel Arrieta sports a 3-1 record and a 3.71 earned run average. The El Paso, Texas native leads the team with 41 strikeouts. Freshman JJ Kruzel has progressed well and is 3-1 on the year. He has fanned 30 batters and tossed a complete-game shutout of Jarvis Christian two weeks ago.
 
Ballyhooed senior pitcher Alex Goodman joins the staff after returning from an offseason injury. In his first start of the season last weekend against Texas College he tossed six innings and surrendered one hit and allowed one walk and fanned seven batters.
 
Offensively, USW is led by senior first baseman Ean Smith. The Las Cruces, N.M. native is batting .354 and leads the team with 23 runs batted in. Junior Ben Tingen sports a team-high .381 batting average and has totaled nine RBI. Sophomore Jesus Chavez is batting .319 with nine RBI to go along with a team-high eight doubles.
