Mustang Baseball Fights Through Adversity and Takes 3 out of 4 From Wiley

HOBBS, N.M. - University of the Southwest baseball swept Red River Athletic Conference rival Wiley College 9-8 and 11-10 Saturday afternoon at Jake Williams Field.

"I thought are guys competed all weekend. We are extremely banged up right now and after a tough loss in extras in game one it was nice to see our guys rebound take the next three games," USW head coach Steve Appel said. "I think some guys offensively really had some good at bats. Over the past week we have had to make some minor adjustments and it was nice seeing our middle of the lineup produce some nice numbers.   On the mound, our guys just competed. Something we haven't seen the last couple of weeks. They didn't let the little things get to them like previously. Now it's time to get healthy and work our butts off this week. We need to focus on continuing to get better and I'm confident we can put all three aspects of the game together on the road next weekend."

Senior Chris Estrada went 2-for-5 adding three runs, one RBI and a triple in game one alone, while Sam Moreno went 3-for-4 with five RBI and scored a pair of runs.

Seniors Adrian Rodriguez and Ean Smith each went 2-for-4.

Starting on the bump in game one was senior Axel Arrieta. The El Paso, Texas native pitched through six innings, giving up five hits, six runs and walked four and fanned nine batters.

Senior Marvin Ortiz relieved in the seventh inning and allowed two hits and two runs. Sophomore Josiah Acton came in for the Mustangs in the eighth innings, allowed a hit and three walks struck out three batters.

Starting game two for USW was freshman Orlan Warren. Warren pitched four innings, allowed seven hits, three runs and three walks and whiffed a pair of batters.

Freshman JJ Kruzel came in during the fifth inning, allowed three hits, five runs and three walks and struck out three batters. Freshman Nick Martinez picked up the save for the Mustangs.

Senior Kenny Corona went 3-for-3 with three added runs, while freshman Gabe Valdez went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run.

The Mustangs continue conference play April 6th and 7th with a series at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas.
