Mustangs drop 2 games on the road

USW vs. JARVIS CHRISTIAN

The USW men's basketball team's attempt to come from behind and upset Jarvis Christian College came up just short on Thursday night as the Bulldogs scored six straight points in overtime to escape with a 87-86 win.

Rontrell Hills scored 22 points to the lead the Mustangs (3-11, 2-6 RRAC), who tied the game with Jarvis (6-8, 3-4)  in the final minutes after trailing by as many as 13 in the game, and by 11 with under seven minutes left in the game.

Josh Harris added 18 points while Emmanuel McNeil (16 points, eight rebounds) scored 14 points in the second half and came within a rebound of a double-double.

The Mustangs had 20 assists in the game but were out-rebounded by the Bulldogs 30-20. The Mustangs lead by 5 points late in the game (1:45 seconds) and in overtime (0:43) , but key turnovers allowed Jarvis to tie the game. However, the Mustangs had one last chance to win the game with the score at 87-86 and 0:23 seconds remaining, but Emmanuel McNeil's five-jumper fell off the back iron as time expired.

For USW, Thursday's loss was the sixth time a game was decided by seven points or less during conference play.

USW vs. WILEY COLLEGE

University of the Southwest committed 15 turnovers and shot just 38 percent from the field in a road loss at No. 12 Wiley College, 96-65, on Saturday night.

USW (4-12, 2-7 RRAC) for the 2nd straight game lost a rebounding battle (54-33), while allowing 18 offensive rebounds. WC's plus-20 advantage on the glass proved to be the difference in the game as the Mustangs could never establish a defensive presence throughout the game, as the Wildcats had 20+ points in second chance points. The Mustangs never led in the game and were not able to find a way to consistently score as they turned in their worst shooting performance of the season.

"I think the OT loss at Jarvis took a toll on us", stated head coach Timm Dixon. "I know that it definitely played a factor, in how we played, but credit to Wiley, as their defensive pressure on us took us out of offensive rhythm and we shot poorly, when you need to shoot very well to beat a top 25 team"

Emmanuel McNeil scored 16 points and again was one rebound away from a double-double with nine. Josh Harris (4-8 FG) scored 14 points.

The Mustangs return to action Thursday (7 p.m MST) when they host Texas College at the Student Life Center as part of a double-header with the women. There will be no internet or live stats for the game.
