HOBBS, NM---The Lady Mustang Soccer program took their undefeated conference record to the pitch on Thursday afternoon as they welcomed fellow undefeated conference opponent University of Houston-Victoria to Hobbs. The Lady Mustangs scratched and clawed their way to a 0-0 tie. Head Coach D'Angelo Garcia understands that a tie is better than a loss, but sees this match as a learning experience for his team as many girls had to play crucial minutes.
"Today we just didn't play our game. These conference games aren't so easy but when you play at home, you have a better chance in earning the 3 points. Don't get me wrong, a tie is better than a loss but when you outshoot your opponent, the stats speak for themselves. Two unbeaten teams in conference play, playing at home, what more do we want? I believe this game will teach us some things we definitely need to work on especially with our depth in players. This is the perfect time for players to receive minutes and shine, especially since our two top strikers are out at the moment. It's dog eat dog when it comes to earning a starting spot. Right now, we need players to step up and do the things the right way to contribute. We play a very talented OLLU side on Saturday. Hopefully we can get the result in our favor before hitting the road in 4 straight games".
The Mustangs won almost every statistical category on the afternoon, but were unable to capitalize on their chances. USW outshot UHV 21-7. The Mustang offense really got rolling in the 2nd half as they outshot the Lady Jaguars 15-5 in the 2nd half and overtime periods. Although the offense was unable to push one across, the defense stepped up in a big way and only allowed 7 total shots to a UHV squad who has scored 10 goals through their first 4 conference matches.Â
Lady Mustang keeper
Andrea Martinez kept as clean sheet as they saved all 7 shots on net.
Mayeli Torres led the Mustang attack with 3 shots on net as she moved from defense to attack in the 2nd half to make up for the lack of bodies in the front of the field.Â
The Lady Mustangs host Our Lady of the Lake on Saturday afternoon as USW will honor their 4 senior student-athletes with a ceremony that will take place immediately following their match with OLLU. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 and Senior Day festivities tentatively scheduled for 3:15 PM MST.Â
Saturday's match and Senior Day festivities will be live-streamed through our Mustang TV.Â
