SHREVEPORT, LA---It took the Mustangs 77 minutes to score, but their relentless offensive attack paid off on Thursday as they defeated the LSU-Shreveport Pilots 2-0 to clinch a berth in the 2019 RRAC Conference Tournament. The Lady Mustangs currenly hold the top spot in the conference standings with 1 match to go on Saturday afternoon. USW has a chance to clinch the regular season title with a victory against LSU-Alexandria, giving them a first round bye in the conference tournament.
"Adversity was the biggest topic preparing for this game. We all knew how much was at stake, and I believed the team handled it very well after today's outcome. For us to remain where we are in standings, we had something to protect. The girls played with heart and never gave up from the very beginning. It's not very easy to play on the road against top contenders but I believe this team can do great things leading into Saturday against a very physical team. We dominated for the most part today and that's what we need to bring with us on Saturday." said Head Coach
D'Angelo Garcia
The Lady Mustangs dominated the match from start to finish. USW outshot the Pilots 18-1 with shots on goal and the Lady Mustangs got off 27 shots in the match. But it was 2 shots that were the difference in the match as
Kimberly Nevarez scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute off an assist by
Priscilla Garcia. Garcia would go on to add another goal in the 84th minute off an assist from defender
Marissa Munoz.
Goalkeeper
Andrea Martinez had a relatively boring match as she only faced 1 shot on net. The freshman pitched her 5th shutout of the season and has only allowed 2 total goals all season in conference play.
The Lady Mustangs take on LSU-Alexandria on Saturday afternoon. Head Coach
D'Angelo Garcia understands what is at stake on Saturday and knows his girls will be ready for the challenge. " It's a championship game for us and it will be a fantastic feeling going back home knowing that we are regular season champions with a first round bye in the conference tournament. If we can play like we did today with some minor fixtures, there is no doubt that we can do it. I am also very proud with our total team effort today from our powerhouse backline to both our forwards getting on the score sheet. We need total team effort for Saturday's game."
