FORT WORTH, TX---The Mustang Basketball program kicked off their second week of action by traveling to Fort Worth, TX to take on the Texas Wesleyan Rams. The Mustangs entered the game with a 1-1 record after their opening weekend at the Northern New Mexico Classic. USW was unable to come away with the road victory, as they lost 73-62.
"This was a tough loss because (Texas) Wesleyan just outworked us on both ends of the floor today" said Head Coach
Cory Hitchcock. "I expect our guys to compete for 40 minutes and we didn't do that. We had too many turnovers and they took advantage of it. That's what good teams do; take advantage of extra opportunities. Now we have to bounce back and get ready for Saturday. It will be another tough test for us, but I expect our guys to bounce back and be ready to compete."
Rontrell Hills led all players in points in the game with 24, on 11-19 shooting from the field. Hills grabbed 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 1 block in 33 minutes of play.
Akeem Black and
Emmanuel McNeil were also in double-figures with 14 and 10 points respectively. McNeil had 9 rebounds and 2 assists, while Black had 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
The Mustangs entered the 2nd half only down 2 points, but were unable to regain the lead as the Rams ran away with the game late. USW shot just 37% in the 1st half and 11% from 3-PT. The Mustangs were 1-13 from behind the 3-PT line.
USW continues their road trip as they travel to Goodwell, Oklahoma to take on the OPSU Aggies on Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 PM MST.
