MBB: Mustangs Fall on Road To Lubbock Christian University

Lubbock, TX- The Mustangs traveled to Lubbock, Texas on Friday to take on NCAA Division 2 opponent Lubbock Christian. The Mustangs played a well fought game, turnovers proved to be costly as Lubbock Christian eventually came out on top 73-55. This loss brings the Mustangs to a season record of (4-7).

The first half of the game was pretty back and forth as the Mustangs and Lubbock Christian exchanged the lead 5 times. Lubbock Christian went on to score 8 points in the final 2 minutes of the half to open up a lead. The Mustangs would go into the half trailing 32-26.

The second half was much like the first. The Mustangs came out hot rallying off 7 points to take the lead. After that Lubbock Christian took control of the game. The Mustangs would pull to within 5 points with 5 minutes left in the game but that was the closest they would get.

Head Coach Cory Hitchcock has this to say following his teams loss. “Lubbock Christian played a heck of a game! That’s a great team who takes care of the basketball. We played a lot of young guys with very little experience and had some silly turnovers. We can’t turn the ball over 20 plus times and expect to win. We need to do a better job of valuing the basketball. We also have to do a better job playing team basketball. We are not an iso team but at times guys get away from the offense and try to do their own thing. It hurts us. We need to make sure these guys understand the importance of playing together. We will continue to work hard and teach these guys. We are getting better and they are working their tails off. It’s a process and it will take some time. I’m confident we will grow quickly and learn from losses like this.”

Akeem Black was the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 10 points. Cortez Williams Jr. and Alex Pena pitched in 9 points each as well.

The Mustangs travel to West Texas A&M today for their last non-conference game of the season. Tip-off is set for 4 PM MST.
