ALPINE, TX---The Lady Mustangs earned their first victory of the season on Saturday as they defeated NCAA Division 3 opponent Sul Ross State on the road. The victory is the first career collegiate victory for Head Coach
Devonte Brewer who is in his first season at the helm for the Lady Mustangs. "I'm excited to get my first win" said Head Coach
Devonte Brewer. "But not for me. I'm excited because it meant a lot to the girls. They needed this win and they earned it. In the end, it's all about the student-athletes".
The Mustangs used a monster 23-point 3rd quarter to take the lead and pull away with the victory. The Lady Mustangs had 4 scorers in double-figures.
Mykal Thomas led all scorers in the game with 19 points. Thomas was 7-15 from the field including 5-6 from the charity stripe. The 19 points and 12 rebounds is the 1st double-double for Thomas on the season. However,
Elisa Gonzalez stole the show tonight with the 1st triple double of the season for USW. Gonzalez had 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. The junior played in 38 minutes and was 5-17 from the floor.
Isabel Rodriguez (13 points) and
Harlei Haceesa (10 points) were also in double figures.
"We started off slow, but picked it up the 2nd half. We started pushing the tempo and attacking them offensively instead of settling for 3s. We had a huge 3rd quarter again. We had 4 players in double figures and Mykal had a double-double. We needed this as a program. Hopefully it starts some momentum because we have a tough test coming next weekend" said Head Coach
Devonte Brewer.
The Lady Mustangs are back on the road Friday as they take on University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma then follow it up with Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday.
