The Lady Mustang Basketball Program traveled to San Antonio on Saturday for their final road game of the season and the last game of their 5-game road trip. USW (6-17; 3-13) lost to OLLU (21-6; 14-2) by the score of 99-63. The loss officially eliminates USW from conference tournament qualification.
The Mustangs found themselves down only 9 at half to the conference-leaders, but fell flat in the 3
rd quarter which took them out of the game. "Going into the half down 9, I was pretty happy because we didn't execute very well but we were still in the ball game. Coming out for the 3
rd quarter, OLLU tightened up and really took advantage of our mistakes and we couldn't get anything going." Coach Hitchcock had to say about the change of play at halftime by OLLU.
The Mustangs were without their Senior captain
Catarina Garcia who is out for the season with a lower-body injury. Garcia has played the most minutes and dished out the most assists this season. "Not having Cat was tough because she brings so much confidence and poise to the position for us. The ladies really look to her for help in pressure situations." Coach Hitchcock with some thoughts on the loss of his senior point guard
Catarina Garcia.
Naomi Solsberry replaced Garcia at the starting point guard spot and recorded 12 points and 4 assists, but had 8 turnovers in her first game at the position. " I thought Naomi did a great job stepping up and running the point in Cat's absence. She found out 5 hours before the game she would be starting at point and has never played point for us. She stepped up, accepted the challenge and I was impressed." Hitchcock with a vote of confidence for Solsberry who stepped into an uncomfortable position.
The Lady Stangs had 3 players in double-figure scorings:
Naomi Solsberry (12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals,
Mykal Thomas (12 points 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal) &
Harlei Hacessa (14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists). The team shot 38.3% from the field and only 20% from 3-pt line
"Now it's time to focus on Jarvis and have a great week of practice. It's a big week for us and I'm excited to see how the ladies will finish the season" says Coach Hitchcock about the upcoming week.
The Lady Mustangs finish up their 2018-2019 season this upcoming week with 2 home games at the Maddox Student Life Center on Thursday against Jarvis Christian (1-26) and Saturday against Wiley College (8-16).
