The Lady Mustangs softball team had their second road trip of the season over the weekend when they traveled to Austin, Texas to take on conference foe Huston-Tillotson. Coming off of a conference sweep the weekend before against Texas College, the Lady Mustangs looked to carry that momentum into this series. After a change of plans due to weather, the Lady Mustangs went straight into their first game after a long day on the road. The trip looked to have no affect on them as they took control winning game 1 of the series before dropping the double header on Friday afternoon.
GAME 1 (USW 2 - HT 1) [ 8 inning]
The first game of the series saw
Gabby Heckmann getting the start on the mound for the Lady Mustangs. Heckmann's game on the mound was anything but easy, as she worked her way out of multiple jams and made Huston-Tillotson strand 12 runners on base. Through 8 innings of work, Heckmann gave up 11 hits and allowed only 1 run.
The offense wasn't as productive as it needed to be, but it did enough to back up Heckmann on the mound. Huston-Tillotson jumped ahead first in the 3rd inning before the Lady Mustangs tied it up in the 5th when
Monika Madrid hit a shot to deep left-center for a double followed by a bunt single by
Chelsea Carroll to move Madrid to third before Heckmann helped herself out with a deep sac fly to center field.
Both sides were held scoreless the remainder of regulation to force extra innings. In the top of the 8th, with two outs
Sarena Maynez scorched a ball over the center fielders head to score Adriana Horton from 1st base and take a 2-1 lead.
Heckmann would do her job in the circle and get a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half to take the W.
GAME 2 (HT 9 - USW 1) [6 innings]
The Lady Mustangs looked to have carried their momentum from the night before into game two of the series when they scored right away in the 1st inning. Huston-Tillotson wasn't going away quietly as the responded in the bottom half of the first with 2 runs of their own to take a 2-1 lead. Once they took the lead they didn't look back as they would put up 14 hits as opposed to the Lady Mustangs 3 to end the game by run-rule in the 6th.
The Lady Mustangs bats didn't show up in this game which would force the rubber match for game 3.
GAME 3 (HT 7 - USW 1)
The series finale wasn't much different than game 2 of the series. The Lady Mustangs offensive production did not produce as they caught some bad luck as they could not find the holes. Huston-Tillotson took control in the 2nd inning when they scored 5 runs to take a 6-0 lead over the Lady Mustangs. The Lady Mustangs would get one run in the 7th, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 7-0 deficit they were in.
Gabby Heckmann was the bright spot of the offense as she went 2-3 in the game.
