HOBBS, NM----The USW Volleyball program took to the Jack and Mabel Student Life Center for the 2nd time this season as they hosted West Texas foe UTPB. This is the 2nd meeting between the two teams this season with the Falcons defeating the Mustangs in the first meeting in early September. The two teams met in Odessa on September 5th in Game 1 of the Dr. Aicinena Invitational. The Invitational also had the Mustangs competing against NCAA Division 2 opponents Texas A&M International & Westminster College.
The Falcons defeated the Mustangs 3-0 Tuesday night, which brings their record to 3-11 on the season. The scores may look identical in the scorebook, but the effort and level of play brought by the Lady Mustangs far exceeded what happened earlier in the season.
"Tonight's loss was tough. The ladies had many moments of greatness; however the consistency in executing the game plan in each set was not there. At this point in the season, consistency is a must. UTPB has a good team, but our growth was evident from our first match against them this season" said Head Coach
Katrina English following Tuesday night's tough loss at home.
The Mustang attack was led by Freshman
Alexia Esparza, who finished the night with 9 kills on 30 attempts, only committing 1 error on the night. Fellow Freshman
Martinique Larvingo and
Maliyah Davis finished with 5 and 4 kills respectively.
Sarah Marquez had a team-high 14 assists on the night and also recorded 5 digs. Another freshman,
Samantha Dreibelbis, led the team in digs with 8 and blocks with 6.
