HOBBS, NM---The USW Men's Soccer program opened up their 2019 Red River Conference schedule with a 2-0 home victory over Texas College. The victory is the 1st official victory of the season as an earlier win versus Sul Ross was forfeited.
"It means everything to us to get this first conference victory. We have had a rough start to the season, with coming up short in several games early on. It feels good to get the monkey off our back" said Head Coach
Edgar Negrete after the game on the first victory in RRAC play. "It feels good to see the guys smiling again."
The Mustangs scored a goal in each half courtesy of
Gerardo Tenorio and
Brandon Cataldi.
Gerardo Tenorio scored the first goal of the game in the 28th minute off of a
Antonio Menendez assist. Cataldi's goal came off a PK in the 57th minute.
USW dominated the shot total by outshooting Texas College 15-9 and winning the corner kick battle 4-2.
Devin Robbins posted his first shutout of the season making 5 saves along the way.
The Mustangs are back in action this Saturday as they host Jarvis Christian in another Red River Conference matchup. Coach Negrete knows he wants his players to enjoy the victory tonight, but tomorrow is right back to work at practice to prepare. "The next day we have to come back and grind. We know Jarvis is a dangerous team and they knocked us out of the playoffs a few years ago. So we know how serious they can be and we just need to show up and play."
