HOBBS, NM---10 minutes is all it took for the Mustangs to put Jarvis away on Saturday afternoon. USW netted 4 goals in an 10-minute span in the 1st half to give them a 4-0 victory and put their conference record at 2-0.
Luis Calvillo got the scoring started in the 19th minute as he headed a ball into the back of the net which came off two other headers from his teammates
Antonio Menendez and
Julian Sosa. The goal put the Mustangs up 1-0 which was all they needed to pull of the victory. But the scoring party wasn't quite over yet as the Mustangs scored in the 22nd, 25th and 27th, minutes.
Luis Calvillo scored his 2nd goal of the game off an assist from forward
Elton Tettey.
Gerardo Tenorio and
Antonio Menendez were the other two Mustangs to score.
"We talked about burying our chances early. We wanted momentum early." said Head Coach
Edgar Negrete.
The Mustangs came into conference play this week without a victory and now are 2-0, and in the drivers seat of the conference. Coach Negrete understands the importance of being 2-0 and hopes that his boys are ready to continue their hard work. "It feels good right now. The guys are happy playing football again. That's all a coach can ask for."
The Mustangs host Huston-Tillotson on Saturday afternoon in another RRAC matchup. "HT is a team we struggled with last year. I'm going to let the boys enjoy Sunday, but we are right back to work on Monday preparing for Saturday's match." said Coach Negrete.
