Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Jacob Jarreau

WVB Lady Mustangs dominate Steers at home

HOBBS, NM---The Lady Mustangs welcomed Texas College to the Jack & Mabel Student Life Center on Saturday for the Red River Athletic Conference matchup. USW made sure the Steers visit was short as they swept the 3-game match in dominating fashion not allowing Texas College to break the 18 point mark in any of the 3 sets. The victory pushes the Lady Mustangs conference record to 3-2 which puts them in 4th in the conference.

"We got the win and that's what is important right now. It's still a challenge for us to be consistent throughout the match. The roller coaster rides and unforced errors are things were still working on, and at this point it's a necessity." said Head Coach Katrina English who earned the victory on her 21st birthday (Information has been fact checked and confirmed).

The Lady Mustangs dominated the scoreboard and the stat sheet as they led the game in total kills, aces, and assists.
Freshman Martinique Larvingo and Maliyah Davias earned the spot as the kills leaders for the team on the afternoon with 7 total kills each. Larvingo added 3 blocks, including 2 solo blocks, and Davis contributed 6 digs and 1 ace for the Lady Mustangs.

"Our focus this past week was to be more consistent in our passing throughout our rallies and I think they did that. It allowed us to execute at a higher rate." said Coach English on their in-week adjustments to prepare themselves for this match.

USW had no shortage of digs and assists as sophomore Autumn Lopez had 13 digs on the day, while the setting duo of Sarah Marquez (13) and Dylann Bylund (10) combined for 23 assists to set up their teammates.

The Mustangs host Huston-Tillotson and Our Lady of the Lake this next week in pivotal conference matchups as both teams are ahead of the Mustangs in the RRAC standings by 1 game.

Coach English knows that both of these programs are talented, but she knows that her Lady Mustangs are going to welcome the challenge and the chance to move up in the standings. "I think that we have to have the mentality of being the best. It's something were capable of doing, we just have to consistent in our attack. They're both going to bring their A-game. They're both great programs, but so are we. We need to stay focused, work hard in practice and keep our eye on the prize."

Thursday night's matchup against HTU is scheduled for 6:00 PM MST as the match is Mustang Pride Day and a PINK OUT. The match on Saturday beings at 1:00 MST against OLLU.
