ALAMOSA, CO---The Mustang Baseball program traveled to Alamosa, CO to take on NCAA Division 2 opponent Adams State. USW hosted ASU last season in a 4-game series in which the Mustangs won all 4-games. The Mustangs would not keep up that this season as the two teams split the doubleheader today. Adams State walked off the Mustangs in Game 1, but the Mustangs answered right back in Game 2 with a dominant 14-3 victory in Game 2.
GAME 1
ASU 7---USW 5
The Mustangs scratched out 6 hits in Game 1, with no hitter having more than 1 hit in the game.
Brian Rodriguez and
Ismael Brenes both scored 2 runs in the cause, but was not enough as Adams State rallied for 6 runs in the bottom of the 7th off of Mustang starter
JJ Kruzel.
Kruzel last 6 1/3 inning allowing 10 hits, 7 runs and struck out 2 batters. Cedric Reynauld sent a 3-1 fastball over the right-field fence to walk off the Mustangs and give them the victory.
GAME 2
USW 14---ASU 3
Coming off an emotional series-opening loss, the Mustangs took their frustration out on the Adams State pitching staff and battered them around for 14 runs on 16 hits. The Adams State defense did their staff no favors as they committed 3 errors in the game.
Brian Rodriguez (3-3),
John Magruder (3-5) and
Nicholas Palomino (3-5) all had 3 hits for the Mustangs. Palomino drove in 3 runs and Rodriguez,
Luis Castillo and Magruder drove in 2.
Kevin Whitaker got the win for the Mustangs as he threw 3 1/3 innings allowing 2 earned runs and struck out 3.
Carlos Baldenegro threw the final 3 2/3 innings striking out 4 and allowing only 2 hits.
The Mustangs are back in action Saturday morning with Games 3 &4.
Orlan Warren is getting the start on the mound in Game 3 and freshman
AJ Cordova is getting the start in Game 4 in his home state.
