HOBBS, NM---The Mustang Baseball program took on the Bethany Swedes over the weekend. These two teams met exactly one year ago in a 3-game series in which the Mustangs swept the Swedes. This years series was the total opposite as Bethany won the series 3-1. The Mustangs however did win Game 4 by the score of 10-7 leaving them with a victory in their final game before their RRAC schedule beings this weekend.
Coming off a 14-1 loss in Game 3, the Mustangs needed to bounce back in a serious way to have some momentum moving into conference play.
Nick Martinez took the ball on the mound for the Mustangs and despite some poor defense behind him, the righty threw 4 innings allowing 7 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 4 Swedes batters. Sunday afternoon had a bad case of the Hobbs winds which played a major factor in the game as fly balls and pop ups were altered with the 40 mph gusts.
Trailing 6-0 after the top of the 2nd, the Mustangs were up against the ropes, but the Mustangs did not give up as they exploded for 5 runs in the 3rd inning to tie the game up at 6-6. Despite a run from Bethany in the top of the 5th, USW answered with 3 of their own to take the lead.
Jacob Wyly lead off the inning with a solo home run that still has not landed deep behind the left field fence.
Isaac Baeza come in relief in the 5th inning and allowed an unearned run, but was credited with the win as the Mustangs took the lead in the bottom of the 5th.
Carlos Baldenegro earned the 2 inning save as he allowed only 1 walk and faced 7 batters in his 2 innings of work.
A pair of Jacob's led the way for the Mustangs as
Jacob Harris and
Jacob Wyly both had 2 hits and 2 runs in the game. Wyly finished the game with 3 RBIs.
John Magruder was 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. The Mustangs finished with 10 hits in the game.
The Mustangs open up Red River Conference play this weekend as they host Our Lady of the Lake University. Game 1 is scheduled for 1:00 PM MST on Friday afternoon. Game 2 will start at 12:00 PM MST on Saturday afternoon and Game 3 will be 30 minutes following Game 2.
