Box Score TEXARKANA, TX---The Lady Mustangs played their 2nd game of the season on Saturday afternoon against Texas A&M-Texarkana. The matchup was a rematch of Friday night and another RRAC matchup for both programs. USW went down big after the first quarter and was unable to make up the deficit. TAMUT took down the Lady Mustangs 72-48.Â
"A slow start again put us in a big hole. We played a little tougher in quarters two through 4. We had way too many turnovers, but that's what is expected with a young and inexperienced group. The growing pains is part of the process but we still fought and I am very proud of that" said Head Coach
Devonte Brewer on Saturday afternoon's loss to TAMUT.Â
The Lady Mustangs had 12 turnovers in the 1st quarter and were down 25-6 entering the 2nd quarter. After the 1st quarter, TAMUT outscored USW by only 5 points. The defensive intensity picked up and the turnovers decreased. "The difference was our activity on defense" said Brewer. "We made things harder for them and we had less turnovers the rest of the way. The ladies really responded well after that first quarter and for that, I am proud of them."Â
Isabel Rodriguez led the way for USW with 12 points in 32 minutes of play. The senior guard grabbed 7 rebounds, had 2 assists and 2 steals.
Shanyce Cabrales had 9 points all in the 3rd quarter coming from beyond the 3-point line.
Kenedi Tanks had a great 2nd quarter with 7 points as well as 6 rebounds in the game.Â
Despite not an overwhelming stat line, freshman guard
Gigi Waddell brought a type of energy off the bench that the Lady Mustangs were lacking. The freshman had 5 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. "One of the bright spots today was definitely Gigi. She has always showed flashes of what she can do and today she showed it. She still has ways to go, but it started on the defensive end for her and that effort got her offensive game going" said Brewer on his freshman spark plug.Â
The road does not get any easier for USW as they travel to (RV) LSU-Shreveport on Tuesday night in a RRAC matchup. Coach Brewer isn't worried about the results right now, but is happy with the process and growth the girls have made over the past 2 days. "The outcome right now isn't my focus. Yes no doubt I want to win, but I understand the process and our situation. A back to back after a relocation is tough. But we saw some good things that we can build on and some things we can work on. We're excited to get some rest tomorrow. The overall goal is to continue to progress and knock off the rust." said Brewer.Â
