WBB: Rodriguez's double-double leads USW to first victory of 2021

HAWKINS, TX---The USW Women's Basketball program earned their first victory of the season on Thursday night in convincing fashion as they took down Red River opponent Jarvis Christian, 80-64. The victory pushes USW's record to 1-3 on the season and conference play.

"It's always nice to get a win. We're not a finished product yet, but we have found our identity as a team. Our defense has been better and we're winning the rebound battle. 21 assists on 30 makes is always a great day. 10 out of 11 girls were able to score which makes me happy!" said Head Coach Devonte Brewer after Tuesday night's victory.

USW was lead by their outstanding senior guard Isabel Rodriguez. Rodriguez recorded her 1st double-double of the season as she scored 17 points on 7-12 shooting to go along with 13 rebounds. Rodriguez also contributed 7 assists and had 4 steals in the victory. "Isa plays hard all the time. She's a special talent and one of the best in our conference. She can really do it all. She affected every aspect of the game tonight. I still believe she has another gear she's waiting to pull out." said Brewer on his El Paso native.

The next leading scorer for the Lady Mustangs was point guard Shanyce Cabrales. "I can't speak highly enough of Shanyce. She's really stepped up as our point guard and as our leader. When she's hitting shots, it really opens up the floor for her teammates. She added coming off screens and off the dribble, so her shooting has improved this season" said Brewer on Cabrales. Cabrales had 15 points of her own all coming from the 3-point line.

The 80 points by the team is a new season-high and USW saw 4 players with double-digit points: Rodriguez (17), Cabrales (15), Bortoli (10) and Waddell (10). The Lady Mustangs made 12 three-pointers in the game. "The game plan was to play defense and ride that for easy shots. Offensively we wanted to move without the basketball and move the ball around. When we play together and continue to learn where players like to be, then the offense flows" said Brewer on the offensive outburst tonight and the game plan going into it.

USW will take on the same Lady Bulldog team this Saturday afternoon in the another RRAC matchup. Coach Brewer is happy about the victory, but he knows that the ladies must focus up and make adjustments for Saturday's game. "Our adjustments will be to clog the middle more" said Brewer on the plan of attack for Saturday. "We have to force them into rushed shots. They beat us in size, so we try to out run them. We also have to take care of the ball a bit more. We had 21 turnovers tonight and we want to clean that up. It's very hard to beat a team twice and we still have a lot to improve on, so we aren't satisfied after tonight's victory. We want to be consistent and play at our best every time we step on the floor"
