HAWKINS, TX---Coming off their first win of the season Thursday night, the Lady Mustangs continued their dominance over Jarvis Christian with a convincing 92-73 victory Saturday afternoon. The victory brings USW's record to 2-3 on the season which is good for 3rd place in the conference standings.
"Today's win really started on the defensive side. We really have picked it up on that side of the ball and it's made our offense flow" said Head Coach
Devonte Brewer following Saturday's win.
The 92 points is another season-high for USW and it was thanks to a total team effort on the offensive side of things. USW had 5 players in double-figures (Bortoli, Rodriguez, Cabrales, Rios & Waddell). "We're learning to play with one another and it's all about trusting each other" said Brewer on the improved offense the last two games.
Shanyce Cabrales led the Lady Mustangs with 20 points in 30 minutes of play. The senior guard was 7-14 from the field and 6-13 from 3-point range. Brewer is very pleased with how Cabrales has been playing and knows that when she gets hot, she gets super hot. "Shanyce works on her shot everyday. She's earned this success and she doesn't force too many things. She handles the ball for us but she is also great on catch and shoot. We trust her so much out there."
Isabel Rodriguez had another great game as she was 4-5 plays away from a quadruple-double. Rodriguez had 17 points (8-16 from the floor), 9 rebounds, 9 assists and 8 blocks. "She's so consistent. We have to applaud her effort and energy on the floor every game" said Brewer.
Another great performance game out of true freshman
Gigi Waddell. Waddell had 16 points off the bench in 20 minutes. The guard was 5-6 from the floor and 6-7 from the free throw line. "Gigi is growing up right in front of us. Today she scored 16 and I honestly don't remember them all. It was quiet, but huge for us today. She's getting better everyday and it's really fun to watch her and her growth as a ball player" said Brewer on Waddell's early season success.
With the offense putting up the big numbers, the defense is the key to the recent success in Brewer's eye. "Our identity is on the defensive end. Honestly that's where we spend most of our time in practice. Focusing on the defense, staying active and pressuring the ball is our focus and today we did that all really well." The Lady Mustangs forced 36 Jarvis turnovers including 26 steals.
USW is back in action Monday evening as they take on LSU-Alexandria.
