WSOC: Mustangs Continue to Roll, Win 7th Straight

The University of the Southwest Women's Soccer Team hit the road for San Antonio this past week for two conference showdowns. On Thursday they took on Our Lady of the Lake University who entered play at (6-4) overall and (3-1) in conference play. On Saturday, they took on Texas A&M University-San Antonio who entered play (1-3-2) overall and (0-2-2) in conference play. The Mustangs were able to come away with two more conference victories in the contests.

Thursday's match was a thrilling double-overtime victory 2-1 over OLLU, with Kim Nevarez netting an early goal and Priscilla Garcia netting the game-winning goal. After the contest Head Coach, D'Angelo Garcia said "It's always a fun tough battle with OLLU and today was no different. The high energy and intensity we started the game with helped lead the way in finding the net early on. We were playing great soccer by keeping possession and finding great goal-scoring opportunities. Playing against a well-organized, disciplined team like OLLU, we must compete until the final whistle. We were playing very much defensive for a good amount of time going into OT after they tried switching formations and penetrating through the middle however our defensive battles were in our favor. I reminded the team how bad you want this win. We can talk about tactics all day long but during a game and team like this, it comes down to who wants it more. When we found the game-winning goal in double OT, especially on an away field, there's no better feeling. I was very proud of the team for never giving up and proving our worth once again."

Saturday's contest saw the Mustangs control it throughout and come away with a 3-0 victory. The contest saw three different Mustangs net a goal in Priscilla Garcia, Maya Sanchez, and Emma Rocco. Jennifer Schroeder picked up an assist on the first goal of the contest. Following the contest Coach Garcia said "Coming off a long physical game two days before, we were suffering some minor bumps and bruises. At this time of year, the weather is much hotter here as well and our girls were just fatigued all around. Having never played this team before since they are a brand-new program, we didn't really know what to expect from them. As I said before outshooting our opponents and controlling possession of the game doesn't win you games unless you score your opportunities. We found plenty of opportunities in the early minutes of the game but for some reason, they were not in our favor. Once again, it was one of those frustrating games that we found ourselves in and we had to find a way to earn the win. We had plenty of girls step up who had fresh legs that helped us earn some goals and made significant contributions for our team win. After these two important wins on the road, we find ourselves tied at the top of the table. I hope we can remain focus and humble because we still have a long road to what we really want come November."

Freshman Goalkeeper Kristina Simpson was outstanding in both contests, recording 14 saves and just the one goal allowed between the two contests. Senior Priscilla Garcia now sits at 14 goals on the season and is tied for 9th in goals nationally.  For Kimberly Nevarez it was her 2nd goal of the season, Maya Sanchez now has 8 goals on the year and Emma Rocco picked up her 3rd goal of the year. Jennifer Schroeder tallied her 6th assist of the year on Saturday.

The Mustangs will look to continue their winning streak at home on Thursday at 1:00 PM MST against University of Houston-Victoria (7-5) (3-3). They will stay at home and take on Huston Tillotson (6-2) (5-1) on Saturday at 1:00 PM MST.
