WSOC: Mustangs Remain in 2nd in RRAC Standings

The University of the Southwest Women's Soccer team had two home games this past week. They battled with LSU Alexandria on Thursday and took on first place Louisiana College on Saturday.  Saturday was the last home contest of the regular season and was senior day for the Mustangs.

LSU Alexandria entered the contest (3-6) overall and (2-4) in conference play to take on the Mustangs who sat at (8-3-1) overall and (6-1) in RRAC play. The Generals of LSUA got out to a 1-0 lead but the Mustangs were able to answer back with two goals of their own before the half. The goals were scored by seniors Jennifer Schroeder (8th) and Priscilla Garcia (15th), and both were assisted by Maya Sanchez. The Generals were able to tie things up in the 79th minute before Priscilla Garcia knocked in her 16th goal of the season on an assist by Jennifer Schroeder. Shortly thereafter Maya Sanchez was able to net a goal of her own, her 10th, and LSUA was unable to answer back giving the Mustangs the 4-2 victory.

Following the contest Head Coach, D'Angelo Garcia said "We started off a bit on our heels however this team does not let an early goal affect them. In fact, it pushes the team even harder and I'm proud of the resiliency throughout the game. We had several opportunities to find the net however it wasn't in our favor in the early minutes. Once we found the first goal, they just kept on coming. One thing we have been working on with our forwards is being composed in front of the goal and I believe we did just that. Overall, this was a much-needed win with hopes still high in earning a bye in the first round of the RRAC tournament."

The Mustangs entered Saturday with hopes of taking over the top spot in the conference standings with a victory over Louisiana College who was currently in first. The teams played a hard-fought defensive battle for 110 minutes and no one was able to find the net. The game ended in a tie after two overtime periods. The result kept Louisiana College in the top spot in the RRAC with USW one game back of them.

Following the contest Coach Garcia seemed pleased with the performance saying "Despite controlling possession most of the game and with several chances in scoring, I am extremely proud of the way we played today. I believe this was one of our best performances this season and it was fun to coach. With Louisiana College being a top team in our conference this year, they came here in hopes of a win to win the regular season. Our girls stepped up by not only playing their hearts out, but they played with passion. I am also very proud of the players who have been coming off the bench either with a starting spot or earning minutes. They have stepped up huge for us especially in crucial games like today. After today's result, we have two important games next week that we need to take care of. Despite already clinching a spot in the RRAC tournament, we are aiming to break another record in the history books by clinching a secured bye with earning a top 2 seed. We need to continue to take it game by game, by working hard, and playing Southwest soccer."

As Coach Garcia mentioned the Mustangs (9-3-2) (7-1-1) have clinched their spot in the RRAC tournament and are seeking that first-round bye with a top-two seed in the conference. They will likely need two wins this week to secure a top-two seed, as OLLU is only a half-game behind the Mustangs. This week they will travel to Shreveport to take on LSUS on Thursday and then to Texarkana to take on TAMUT on Saturday in the regular-season finale.
