MSOC: Mustangs Control Contest Against Paul Quinn

The University of the Southwest Men's Soccer Team took on Paul Quinn University on Saturday afternoon. The contest was played on the turf at Hobbs High School due to the recent weather received in the area. The Mustangs came into the contest at 2-4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Paul Quinn came into the contest 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Mustangs were able to control the game for most of it and came away with the resounding 4-0 victory. USW was able to get a goal 28 minutes into the contest and took a 1-0 lead to the half. They came out in the second half on a mission and were able to put two goals on the board in the first four minutes of the second half. They were able to add a fourth goal with 20 minutes left in the contest and stayed stout defensively. This was arguably the most complete and impressive showing of the season from the Mustangs. The team is now 3-0 in RRAC play and are half a game back of first due to playing one less conference contest than (RV) Houston-Victoria

Following the contest, Head Coach Edgar Negrete said "I'm very happy with the team performance all around. Today's game took us a while to get the ball rolling however we were able to come out strong in the second half and perform to a higher level which caused Paul Quinn to quit playing into the second half. This was Armando's first clean sheet and he needed it. I don't think people realize how a goalie is due to the stats that are on paper but we have a great goalkeeper that is one of a kind goalie with enormous talent. We had our defense step up as well but Gael Navarrete played tremendously and he was a very impactful player in today's game. He started our attack from the backline and you can see that his effort was a game-changer. We also had freshman Millaivy score again which I believe he's in great form. I also had Gerardo score a great goal that he has been wanting, especially against Paul Quinn who he's been wanting to score on, and let's say it was a world-class goal. Also, Matthew Alvarado put two in the back of the net which makes me happy because he is slowly starting to find his form again and is becoming a huge threat for other teams. We enjoy the victory and being 3-0 as of now but our biggest challenge of the season is about to come and it will show what we are made of this week. We are undefeated so we have to prepare correctly and get mentally ready and understand that the job is not finished. We have to keep playing and continue to be humble. OLLU is a rival game for us and we know that they are a great team. We will prepare this week and get ready for them. I believe in our boys they just have to come out and want it more."

The goal scorers for the Mustangs, as mentioned by Coach Negrete, were senior Matthew Alvarado (2), Freshman Millaivy Lopez, and senior Gerardo Tenorio. Assists in the contest were tallied by Gael Navarrete (2), Brandon Cataldi, and Adrian Cuevas. In the Goal, Armando Pando had a tremendous contest and the defense of the Mustangs did a great job keeping Paul Quinn from getting too many opportunities to score. Seniors Dan Moreno and Brandon Cataldi were a big part of that as they continue to do a great job as the backbone of the Mustang defense.

The Mustangs will take a road trip to San Antonio this week for two more conference matchups. They will take on OLLU (4-3-1) (3-0-1) on Thursday at 2:30 PM MST. Then, Saturday they will take on Texas A&M University-San Antonio (0-3-1) (0-2-1) at 2:30 PM MST.
