The University of the Southwest Cross Country teams had two participants in the NAIA Cross Country National Championships on Friday afternoon. The Championships were held in Vancouver, Washington at Fort Vancouver National Historic Championship Course and were hosted by the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The Course was a bit wet and sloppy due to the recent weather in the area.
The field for the men's side was comprised of 333 of the best runners from across the country. The Mustangs were represented by a freshman duo of
Guadalupe Garcia and
Armando Hernandez in the 8k event.
Guadalupe Garcia finished with a time of 30:15 and an average mile of 6:06.
Armando Hernandez finished with a time of 31:23 and an average mile of 6:19. The wet track and large field may have had an impact on the two runners, as both finished slightly behind where their times have been the last couple of races.
Head Coach
Tony Skiles said after the race "I'm proud of these boys as well as the whole men's and women's cross country team. It was a huge learning curve for both teams." The Mustangs showcased very young teams on both sides, competing with five freshmen on the men's side and four on the women's side. These two impressive freshmen and the rest of both teams will look to build off the experience gained this year as they head into next season.
