PLAINVIEW, TX---The Lady Mustang Volleyball program kicked off their 2021 spring season with a double-header versus Wayland Baptist University. Originally Friday was supposed to be a tri-match featuring Wayland Baptist and Lubbock Christian, but LCU had to back out at the last minute. Wayland Baptist was 5-3 on the season coming into the matches and were able to defeat USW 3-1 and 3-0.
"It was awesome being able to get the girls on the court in an actual game" said Head Coach
Julia Krebs. "It has been 6 months since the start of our "normal" season. I am happy with today even though the outcome is of course not what we wanted. We were able to get the first day nerves and anxiety out of the way and play some good volleyball after Set 1 of the 1st game. All said & done, I'm proud of how they played against a pretty solid program."
The Lady Mustangs were led by
Alexia Esparza who led USW with 13 kills in Game 1 and 9 kills in Game 2. "Alexia is a go to, she is very smart with her arm swings and decisions at the net. Our middles, both Dylann and Taylor did a great job at always being up and ready for a set which helped open the block" said Coach Krebs. El Paso native
Sarah Marquez had a total of 64 assists and 18 digs in both games combined.
Dylann Bylund had a great all-around day with 17 total kills, 20 digs and 3 blocks on the afternoon. Junior
Autumn Lopez had 37 digs on the day. Hobbs, America native
Taylor Hardison led the team in blocks with 5 on the day.
USW is back in action on March 3rd as they take on Mid-American Christian to start their 3+ week long road trip. Head Coach
Julia Krebs is glad they were able to get a few games in before conference play to give her a sense of where the team stands what they need to tighten up. "We need to tighten up Serve Receive and make some better choices at the net in certain situations. Making sure we maintain our composure and control on our side is always something to continue to work on."
