ALEXANDRIA, LA---The Lady Mustangs faced off with LSU-Alexandria on Thursday for the 3rd time this season in a non-conference matchup. USW was unable to come away with the victory, despite being tied at halftime. The loss pushes USW's record to 2-9 on the season.
"We played well enough to win, we just lacked the energy to finish in the 4th. We didn't shoot the ball particularly well, inside or out. So we missed some opportunities, but you can see the growth." said Head Coach
Devonte Brewer.
The Lady Mustangs were led by 3 seniors in double-figures.
Rhianna Bortoli had 15 points on 5-15 shooting from the field including three 3-pointers, 7 rebounds and 2-2 from the free throw line. Senior point guard
Shanyce Cabrales had 11 points on 3-11 shooting. But
Isabel Rodriguez continued her double-double streak with her fourth straight game with double digit points and rebounds. Thursday night the El Paso native accumulated 15 points and 10 rebounds. "Isa is a special talent. I don't think she knows how good she really is. Once she gets confidence, she's going to be really good. We definitely don't take her for granted. I appreciate what she does night in and night out" said Brewer on his do-it-all guard.
The Lady Mustangs shot 30.5% from the field (25-82) and were 23.3% from 3-point range (7-30). Despite the loss, Coach Brewer is proud of how hard his team is playing the last few weeks and the growth they have shown in this COVID-shortened season. "The growth of this team boils down to a few things. The rebounding has been improved, we are attacking the lane better and we're moving the basketball better. The communication has been better, but most importantly, we aren't turning the ball over at a high clip like we were early in the season. We just need to continue to gain confidence and believe in ourselves and we will get there.
