WSOC: Schroeder's late goal propels USW past UTPB

ODESSA, TX---In th 89th minute of Sunday's match with UTPB, Hobbs native Jennifer Schroeder blasted a free kick just outside the penalty box into the back of the net to give the Lady Mustangs a 2-1 victory.

"Today's game was our first true test of the season. We definitely had our moments offensively where I think we could've been better, but we will always be happy with a win. I'm proud of the girls for fighting through adversity after allowing a late goal. They kept their heads up and continued to fight till the end. We need to be a little more disciplined with our possession but that will come with time. I am also proud of the girls who stepped up today. Jasmin Porras played centre back and did a great job of holding the line for us. She will continue to gain confidence and grow as the season progresses. Maya Sanchez scored her first career collegiate goal. It was a special moment because she was in her hometown and had her family and friends watch her score" said Head Coach D'Angelo Garcia on Sunday's victory.

The Lady Mustangs outshot the Lady Falcons 11-8 with USW having 6 shots on goal. The deciding goal by Jennifer Schroeder in the 89th minute was a special goal said Coach Garcia. "Jen played a majority of the game for us but was struggling finding the back of the net. I had to hype her up and get in her head before putting her back in to finish the final stretch. We received a free kick outside the box and she took the free kick and scored a rocket. I was very proud of her after the game and hopefully this instills confidence in her." said Garcia on Schroeder's game-winning goal.

USW opens up RRAC play this week as they take on University of Houston-Victoria on Thursday and Our Lady of the Lake on Saturday. USW faced off with both of these teams in the 2019 RRAC Tournament. Coach Garcia and company are ready for the challenge that this conference schedule will bring their way. "We have learned so much about ourselves the last two games. This win today was very important for us to have confidence leading up to our first conference games. I know for a fact that we have what it takes and I told the team that we can never be satisfied."
