SHREVEPORT, LA---The USW Baseball program opened up the 2021 RRAC Baseball Tournament on Friday afternoon in upset fashion. The fifth seeded Mustangs defeated the second seeded LSU-Shreveport Pilots in a whacky and wild ballgame. With the victory, the Mustangs move ahead in the winner's bracket where they will take on Texas A&M-Texarkana on Saturday night at 6:00 PM MST.
Freshman starting pitcher
AJ Cordova would like to forget his first inning of tournament play. Cordova allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, including two home runs by the Pilots. But after the first inning, Cordova went into cruise control holding the Pilots to only 1 run and 7 hits across the final 7 innings of his day. The Colorado native also struck out 4 and allowed zero walks to earn the victory.
Isaac Baeza finished out the game for the Mustangs on the mound.
It took a big 6-run eighth inning to propel the Mustangs past LSU-S thanks in part to some sloppy defense from the host team.
Caden Ledbetter,
Omar Baldenegro,
Seth Casias and
Kevin Rase each had 2 hits in the game. Ledbetter led the charge with 3 RBI's.
Omar Baldenegro added 2 RBI's of his own as well as a stolen base.
Seth Casias scored 3 runs on the afternoon.
