MSOC: Mustangs Drop Game to Embry-Riddle

The USW men's soccer team lost to Embry-Riddle on Saturday by the score of 7-0. It was a tough match for the Mustangs after playing a close game and losing 2-0 against (RV) Ottawa University (AZ) on Thursday night. The last season that Embry Riddle played in 2019 they compiled a record of 16-5-1, so they are a very competitive program. The Mustangs got Spring 2021 RRAC Offensive Player of the Year Matthew Alvarado back in the lineup for this contest but were still unable to get anything going offensively. They were only able to get 4 shots off in the contest compared to Embry Riddle's 19. The loss dropped the Mustangs record to 0-2 to start the year.

When asked about the game Saturday, Head Coach Edgar Negrete said "Coming to Arizona we know that it's always going to be a tough team. It's like I tell the boys, we come to play the best teams possible. We played a team that was their conference champ in 2019 and have a great coach behind them, one of the best coaches in NAIA. We didn't get the result we wanted and it was a blowout. It's how we're going to react now going forward. We will have to learn that the teams we are playing are quality teams and even when things don't go our way we have to get back up and get back to work. It's a test to see how our boys will react going forward. Even during ugly situations, there is still plenty of room to learn from our mistakes. We can't dwell on this too much. It wasn't our best game and we got punished. Now we have to focus on our next challenge against a very tough Wayland Baptist. The games will continue to get more challenging but we want to go into conference with the mindset of playing the best teams and not being scared of anyone who comes at us. I believe the boys will come back from this and learn and become better players to overcome our next challenge."

In the contest, both Gabriel Neufeld and Gerardo Tenorio were able to put shots on goal but were unable to sneak one by the goalkeeper. The Mustangs will look to bounce back in their next contest, which will come on the road at Wayland Baptist University on Saturday, September 4th
