MSOC: Mustangs Lose a Tight One to Wayland Baptist

The University of the Southwest Men's soccer team lost a close 1-0 battle against Wayland Baptist on Saturday evening. The game was a defensive battle with Wayland outshooting the Mustangs 10 to 7. Wayland scored the lone goal of the contest on a penalty kick in the second half. The game was also a scrappy one, in which there were 8 yellow cards issued and 26 total fouls.  USW falls to 0-3 to start the season after a tough loss on Saturday. The Mustangs have yet to get the offense going so far on the young season, being shut out in all three contests.

After the contest, Head Coach Edgar Negrete had this to say about the performance, "Going into Wayland we knew it was going to be a tough game. We focused on this game all week. We prepared for them and we were ready for them all around. We knew how they were going to play and the team did a great job understanding what needed to be done. One play is what cost us the game. Wayland went up on a penalty kick and that was the reason we lost the game.  It's a bittersweet moment knowing one play caused the game not to go our way. You know it's frustrating telling people that you have a good team but the scoreboard nor the record show it. I believe in this team and I know this team is special. I know we're a good team and we will get over this hump together.  The storm will pass and when it does the team will see better days."

Last years RRAC Offensive Player of the Year, Matthew Alvarado, was able to put 3 shots on goal but wasn't able to get one past the keeper. Gerardo Tenorio was also able to put a shot on goal for the Mustangs. The Mustangs were stout defensively and goalkeeper Armando Pando only faced 4 shots on goal in the contest, with the lone goal coming off the penalty kick.

The Mustangs will move their attention to their next contest against Southwestern Christian. The contest will take place at home on Monday, September 13th at 3:00 PM. When asked about the upcoming contest Coach Negrete said "Now we move on from this game and prepare for Southwestern Christian who is ranked nationally and look to upset them here at home. Hope to see our home fans with it being our first home game since the pandemic started. We have been a year away from playing at home and it feels to be back."
